Trade-in and buyback for OpenCart stores

Customers value an old phone or laptop right in your OpenCart store and see an estimate straight away. The request lands in your FastTradein workspace, where you inspect the device at intake, send a new price if needed, and record the payout. There is no extension to buy or install: the widget is two lines of code in the built-in HTML Content module.

What the customer sees

  1. Widget on a store website: question about the screen condition

The customer values the device on the site

They pick a model and answer questions about its condition.

  2. Widget showing the preliminary estimate for iPhone 15 128GB

The calculator shows a preliminary estimate

The estimate uses your store prices and rules, together with the customer’s answers.

  3. New offer page the customer receives after inspection

You inspect the device at intake

If the condition differs from what was stated, the customer gets a link to a new offer and can accept or decline it.

What your store gets

  • Your buyback prices

The widget prices each device from your price list and the customer’s answers about its condition. The catalog holds 990+ device configurations, and you can upload your own price table or import it from a link every night.

  • A new offer after inspection

If the device turns out worse than described, the customer gets a link to a new offer and accepts or declines it.

  • A handover record for every deal

The parties and the amount, the stated and the actual condition after inspection, and the IMEI or serial number if you entered it.

  • Payout or a store voucher

Pay by bank transfer or as credit toward a purchase. If you turn on store vouchers, the customer can choose a voucher with a bonus from 0 to 50%.

  • Trade-in at your counter too

The same prices apply in your store: an on-the-spot quote, a handover record, and a voucher with a printed receipt.

  • Requests in your CRM

On the Business and Pro plans requests go to your CRM through webhooks and can be exported to CSV.

Extension or service

A custom trade-in extension

  • Built for your store and installed on your server.
  • Trade-ins can run as OpenCart orders.
  • You pay for the development, for updates to new OpenCart versions, and for checking it against your theme and other extensions.

FastTradein

  • Two lines of code on the page, nothing to install.
  • We update the widget, and you never reinstall the code.
  • Requests, handover records, and vouchers live in your workspace, on servers in Germany (EU).
  • The same prices on your website and at the counter in your store.

A custom extension suits a store that wants trade-ins as OpenCart orders on its own server. FastTradein suits a store that would rather not commission and maintain an extension and also takes devices in at the counter.

How to add trade-in to OpenCart

  1. Create your store workspace

Sign up for FastTradein and choose a plan. 14 days free, no card needed.

    Try 14 days free
  2. Copy the code and add your website

In the workspace, copy the code from the “Widget embed” page: two lines of HTML with your widget key.

Then open “Store settings” and enter your site address in the “Website” field. The widget only loads on allowed websites. If you need it on another address too, add it to “Websites where the widget works”. The number of websites depends on the plan: Starter 1, Business up to 5, Pro unlimited.

This is what the code from the workspace looks like. Your widget key replaces YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY.

    <script src="https://fasttradein.app/widget/fasttradein.js" async data-no-optimize="1" data-no-defer="1"></script>
    <fasttradein-widget key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY" api="https://fasttradein.app" lang="en"></fasttradein-widget>
  3. Create an HTML Content module with the widget code

In the OpenCart admin, open Extensions → Extensions and choose the Modules type. Click the green install button next to HTML Content, then the blue button to create a module.

Name the module, for example FastTradein. In the Description field, switch the editor to code mode: the </> button in OpenCart 3, the Source button in OpenCart 4. Paste the whole code, turn Status on, and save. The standard editor of both versions keeps the <script> line.

  4. Create a trade-in page

Open Catalog → Information and click “+”. Fill in the title, the page text, and the Meta Tag Title. On the SEO tab you can set a Keyword: it becomes the page address when SEO URLs are on in your store.

  5. Show the widget on the trade-in page only

Open Design → Layouts and click “+”. Name the layout, for example Trade-in, add the widget module to the Content Bottom position, and save. In that position the widget sits under the page title and text.

Open the trade-in page again, choose the Trade-in layout in the Layout Override field on the Design tab, and save.

Do not add the module to the default Information layout: all information pages share it, and the widget would appear on every one of them, About Us and Delivery Information included.

  6. Check that the widget works

Open the published page and get a test estimate: choose a device and answer the questions about its condition.

On the “Widget embed” page of the workspace you will see a status showing that the widget works, with the site address and the time it last loaded. If the status is missing, see “Why does the widget not show on my site?”.

Other ways to add the code

The steps above are for the standard OpenCart theme and editor. If your store is set up differently, choose the option that fits.

Multilingual stores

If your store runs in several languages, the HTML Content module form has a tab with a Description field for each language. On each tab, paste the code with that language in the lang attribute: uk, ru, en, pl, de, or es. For any other language the widget shows in English.

Caching and optimization modules

You do not need to clear the OpenCart template cache: a footer change in Theme Editor shows on the storefront at once. We checked this on OpenCart 3 and 4.

If your store runs an optimization module that combines or delays scripts, add the widget script https://fasttradein.app/widget/fasttradein.js to its exclusions. Otherwise the widget may only appear after a scroll or a click. Clear the module cache after any change.

Compatibility

What we checked on the OpenCart 3 and 4 test stores and how it went.

What we checked Result
OpenCart 3 HTML Content module keeps the widget code, code mode in Summernote with the </> button
OpenCart 4 HTML Content module keeps the widget code, code mode in CKEditor with the Source button
Layouts A separate layout and Layout Override, the widget on the trade-in page only
Theme Editor Script in the common/footer template works at once, no cache clearing
Default theme The widget under the page title and text in the Content Bottom position
Coupons A coupon with the voucher code applies in the cart
Gift Vouchers The voucher code is not saved: the field takes up to 10 characters

What to know about OpenCart

  • This is not an OCMOD extension: there is no archive to install, and we update the widget on our side.
  • No OpenCart orders are created: trade-in requests live in your FastTradein workspace.
  • A FastTradein voucher code does not work in the OpenCart cart by itself. To accept it at checkout, the store creates a coupon with that code in advance and, once the coupon is tested, marks acceptance in the FastTradein settings. FastTradein does not create coupons.
  • The widget shows amounts in the currency of your workspace, one per store.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a trade-in extension for OpenCart?

FastTradein needs no separate extension: the widget goes into the built-in HTML Content module or into the theme footer as a line of code. You can commission a trade-in extension from a developer, and then it is built for your store and installed on your server. See “Extension or service” for how the two options differ.

Which devices can customers trade in?

Smartphones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches, headphones, and consoles. In Store settings you turn each type on or off, and you set the buyback prices.

Can I take devices in at my store too?

Yes, on every plan. The same prices apply at the counter: an on-the-spot quote, a handover record, and a payout or a voucher with a printed receipt.

Which OpenCart versions are supported?

The steps were checked on OpenCart 3 and 4 with the standard theme and editor. In other versions the menu names may differ slightly, but the approach is the same: the HTML Content module or a line in the footer template.

HTML Content module or a theme edit?

The module is simpler: you change the code in the admin without editing files, and the widget appears only where you put it. A footer edit is for when the editor strips the <script> line or you need the widget on many pages.

Why does the widget not show on my site?

Check that the site address is on the “Store settings” page in FastTradein, that the module is on, that the layout with the module is chosen in the Layout Override field of the page, and that the editor has not stripped the <script> line. If your store runs an optimization module, add the widget script to its exclusions and clear the cache.

Will the widget fit my store theme?

Yes. The widget is a web component with its own styles, so theme CSS does not break its layout. We checked the default themes of OpenCart 3 and 4. You set the widget colors and font in the workspace.

Will requests show up as OpenCart orders?

No. Trade-in requests live in your FastTradein workspace. On the Business and Pro plans you can send them to your CRM through webhooks.

Does a FastTradein voucher work in the OpenCart cart?

Only after you set it up. You can create an OpenCart coupon with the voucher code, but a one-off discount does not keep a balance. The built-in gift vouchers of OpenCart 3 take codes of up to 10 characters, and a FastTradein code is longer. Mark online acceptance in the FastTradein settings once your chosen method is tested.

How much does trade-in for an OpenCart store cost?

FastTradein takes no commission on deals. Monthly plans: Starter $29 with up to 50 widget requests, Business $99 with up to 300, Pro $199 with no request limit. The first 14 days are free, no card needed.

How can I see the widget before setting it up?

Open the demo and get a test estimate. On your site the widget works with your store’s prices and settings.
